DEVELOPMENTAL ASSESSMENT TRAINING

NACCW offers a number of training courses for those working with children and youth, including the Developmental Assessment Training Course. The course is to help better understand the developmental approach to assessments of young people by child and youth care workers and social workers and to be able to apply the concepts of developmental assessment to assessment tools. We welcome you to have a look at the course details attached. The course is offered over 5 days virtually and has CPD points available.

The overall objective of the training is for participants Child and Youth Care Workers (CYCWs) and Social Workers (SWs) together or independently, to understand the developmental approach to assessments and to be able to apply the concepts of developmental assessment to their assessment tools. This training is relevant to professionals working with children in trouble with the law or children in Child Care  Centres.

  • Exploring concepts used in developmental assessment

  • The Circle of Wholeness (or developmental well-being)

  • Developing an awareness of strengths Probing questions for strengths-based conversations

  • Theoretical underpinnings of the Circle of Wholeness

  • When the circle is broken

  • Engaging children in assessments

  • Goal of assessment

  • Using assessments to develop a care plan

  • Applying a developmental approach to the assessment domains (using organisations templates if applicable).

A Career in Child and Youth Care Work

Child and youth work is a profession that is statutorily regulated in South Africa. The Social Service Professions Act (Act No. 110 of 1978) regulates the professional practice of social service professionals through the South African Council for Social Service Professionals (SACSSP), which is a statutory body established in terms of this legislation. Child and youth care workers can be prepared for registration at auxiliary or professional level, and there are training and educational opportunities for people to pursue the child and youth care profession in community, educational and residential group care settings in South Africa.
