NACCW Webinar with Nicia de Nobrega Title: An Overview of the NACCW Child Safeguarding Policy The webinar will provide an overview of the NACCW Child Safeguarding Policy, a critical document for organisations to promote good practice, ensuring the safety and protection of children in contact with an organisation. The policy’s purpose is to protect children from risk of harm and abuse caused by those who have a duty to protect and care for them, and if abuse occurs, to respond appropriately. A template of the policy will be shared where it can be applied to other organisations.

Use of Self in CYC Practice: CYC practitioners basically bring themselves as the main ingredient in creating useful interactions with young people and families. This workshop will explore how Self grows more complex and powerful as a method to be helpful over the course of one’s career. Our focus will include describing the newer practitioner whose self-energy is based on creating safety, the seasoned practitioner whose use of self builds connection and change, and the mature, fully functioning practitioner whose awareness of self creates a presence that is fully able to build hope, confidence and power in the young person or family. The growth in use of self is mirrored in the three levels of CYC development.

Trauma, Pain and Healing in Child and Youth Care Work Many young people who are involved in child and youth care programs have suffered some form of trauma, and often experience deep and ongoing pain and suffering as a result. As well, many of us who work with these young people carry pain and suffering ourselves that we need to process in order to do our highly emotional and demanding work in an effective manner. This presentation will explore some ways of thinking about trauma and pain, and the processes of healing necessary for becoming shapers of our destiny, rather than victims of fate.

The Therapeutic Use of the Everyday Everyday experiences shape children’s sense of themselves and hold enormous therapeutic potential. How we care for them within those experiences has the power to soothe, to hold, and to repair. It is all the seemingly small, caring acts that, when accumulated over time, actually make the difference in a child’s life. Many core concepts in Child and Youth Care cast light on these seemingly small acts and show us why they are so powerful. This webinar will discuss several of those core concepts with the aim of energising and inspiring your therapeutic use of the everyday.

Heather is CEO of Amal Youth and Family Centre, a non-profit organization providing innovative, culturally diverse services to children, youth and families across Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Heather is Chair of the Board of Governors of CYC-Net. She has published many journal articles and book chapters and co-edited Relational Child and Youth Care in Action. Heather has a PhD in Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria.
